Five Questions Andy Biggs Must Answer About His Decades-Long Tax-Hiking Scheme

Andy Biggs is scrambling to rewrite his decades-long record of supporting tax hikes on working Arizonans, even as he keeps voting to jack up the price of gas, groceries, and everyday essentials for Arizona families.

Here are five questions Biggs must answer about his longstanding scheme to raise taxes on working Arizonans:

1. How can Arizonans trust you not to raise their sales taxes as governor when you’ve spent decades trying to do exactly that in the Legislature and in Congress? As a state legislator, you cosponsored legislation to stick Arizonans with a higher sales tax. You took this bad idea to Congress too, and championed legislation to saddle Arizonans with a 23 percent national sales tax on everything we buy.

   
   

2. Why did you call replacing the income tax with a sales tax increase your “most passionate” tax issue? You specifically said your “most passionate tax issue” is a higher sales tax, even though Arizonans are already paying record-high prices thanks to your Washington agenda.

   
   

3. You’ve said what’s “nice” about a consumption tax is that people can choose whether to pay it. What exactly should Arizona families stop buying to avoid your tax — food, clothing, or housing? Referring to your proposed tax hike, you specifically said: “You choose whether you’re going to pay it…because it’s how you consume.”

   
   

4. When you were first confronted about your support for a 23 percent sales tax, your campaign doubled down on it. Why should Arizonans trust you when you have a two-decade-long record backing tax-hiking schemes?

   
   

5. Sales taxes hit working- and middle-class families hardest. Why should they pay more at the checkout counter when they can barely afford gas and groceries? You voted for the war in Iran four straight times. You also voted to protect and expand Washington’s tariffs, the largest tax hike on Arizonans in 50 years. Combined, your Washington agenda has cost American households thousands, yet you claimed that there is "no inflation” and argued that Washington has “tamed inflation” and “brought everything back down.”
