Andy Biggs’ Tariffs Are Taxes, Arizona Business Leaders Warn

Andy Biggs’ Washington tariffs are the largest tax hike on Arizonans in 50 years, and Arizona's business leaders aren't mincing words about it. In a recent interview on Arizona PBS, Todd Sanders, CEO and President of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, said bluntly, “We need to call these [tariffs] what they are… these are taxes.” 

Sanders isn't alone. Arizona Chamber of Commerce CEO — and former Doug Ducey chief of staff — Danny Seiden warned last year that “tariffs are a bad idea” because “the tariffs are paid by us,” with costs “transferred down to the consumer.” 

And Arizonans are already paying the price. Americans have shouldered 90 percent of the nationwide tariff bill, and Arizona families alone are paying over $2,200 more since the start of 2025. 

Despite this, Biggs voted to protect Washington's tariffs, pushed to expand them further, and has even called them "a brilliant economic strategy." As Arizonans face rising costs at the checkout counter, Biggs has falsely claimed there is "no inflation," insisted the tariffs are "not inflationary," and argued Washington has "tamed inflation" and "brought everything back down." 

Copper State Victory spokesperson Nicholas Simões Machado said: 

“Andy Biggs keeps making life more expensive for Arizona families to advance Washington's agenda. Gas, groceries, prescriptions, utility bills — the costs keep climbing, and now business leaders are confirming what families already know: his tariffs are a tax, and Arizonans are stuck with the bill.”
