Arizonans Call Out Andy Biggs’ Disastrous Cost-Hiking Agenda on “Biggs Costs” Tour

Last week, Arizonans across Phoenix, Yuma, and Tucson joined Copper State War Room’s “Biggs Costs” tour to call out Andy Biggs’ disastrous Washington-first, cost-hiking agenda that has driven grocery, gas, and healthcare prices to record highs for Arizona families.  

From repeatedly backing tax hikes on Arizonans to claiming that there is "no inflation," and that Washington has “tamed inflation,” Biggs has sided with Washington over Arizona at every turn. He’s voted four straight times to protect tariffs, continue the war and keep gas prices high, and cut healthcare for hundreds of thousands while raising monthly premiums.

The Copper Courier: Grocery store worker calls out Biggs for rising food prices, SNAP cuts July 28, 2026

• Gayle Lutz, a Tempe Fry’s grocery worker, is speaking out against Andy Biggs, the Republican nominee for Arizona governor, over the rising cost of groceries.
  

• More than 400,000 Arizonans—including 180,000 children—lost SNAP food assistance after Biggs backed President Donald Trump’s federal budget, which cut SNAP and Medicaid by more than $1 trillion.
  

• Lutz says the cuts have also impacted store revenue and left co-workers struggling.

• Hobbs' campaign and Democratic groups have taken aim at Biggs’ proposal to eliminate the state’s income tax, pointing to his longtime support for replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax of 23%. They say such a “European-style tax” would raise everyday costs.
  

• “From tariffs to health care cuts to his 23 percent sales tax, Andy Biggs keeps finding new ways to make life more difficult and more expensive for Arizona families,” state Sen. Flavio Bravo said.
  

• The 23% sales tax would be inclusive – meaning it would be calculated based on both the purchase price and the tax.

• Some Yuma Democratic leaders on Monday said Republican gubernatorial candidate and Congressman Andy Biggs supports what they call a "cost-hiking economic agenda."
  

• Charlene Fernandez, the Arizona Democratic party chair, and Yuma County District 4 Supervisor Tony Reyes said Biggs has directly caused all-time high grocery, gas and healthcare prices through his votes in Washington.
  

• "Because of Andy Biggs, diesel prices hit all time-highs, driving up shipping costs, supply chain costs and the price of food across the nation.," said Fernandez, who is also a former state lawmaker from Yuma. "His tariff agenda is threatening agricultural exports and putting 7,500 Arizona agricultural jobs directly at risk. That is threatening the livelihoods of our local ag workers and growers."
  

• Hobbs and Biggs have both made recent trips to Yuma. The governor was here last week where she met with the owners of the Chile Pepper restaurant and then with supporters at the Copper State Victory Office in Yuma. Hobbs was joined by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, Yuma County Supervisor Board Chairman Martin Porchas and Yuma City Councilmember Carol Smith.
  

• Many financial experts are saying the current roller coaster of gas prices are due to the ongoing war in Iran.
  

• At the Monday meeting, Yuma Supervisor Reyes said it's a simple matter for him.
  

• “I am here today because my job is to put Arizona and Yuma County first, but Andy Biggs continues to put Washington politics ahead of our community," Reyes said. "If you’ve been to any grocery store, you know that inflation is a reality, it is a reality for shoppers in Arizona, it is a reality for shoppers anywhere. When Andy Biggs talks about “no inflation,” he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

• Local Democrats criticized the economic and healthcare record of Republican candidate for governor during a stop Monday in Yuma on the “Biggs Costs” Tour, an event organized by Copper State War Room, the campaign arm of Arizona Democrats.
  

• Yuma County Supervisor Tony Reyes and Arizona Democratic Party Chair Charlene Fernandez, who hails from Yuma, highlighted Rep. Andy Biggs’ “cost‑hiking agenda,” pointing to his support for a 23% national sales tax, expanded tariffs and healthcare cuts.
  

• Organizers said Biggs has repeatedly backed the national sales tax proposal, calling it his “most passionate” tax policy. They also said he supported tariffs they argue contributed to higher grocery prices.
  

• Noting his 30 years as a county supervisor and 12 years as mayor of San Luis, Reyes said he has spent more than three decades working on infrastructure and quality‑of‑life issues in Yuma County.
  

• He said he believes Biggs came to Arizona “to run for governor and add another position to his résumé” and argued that Biggs does not understand the impact of inflation on Arizona families.
  

• “If you’ve been to any grocery store, you know inflation is a reality,” Reyes said. “When Andy Biggs talks about ‘no inflation,’ he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
  

• Reyes also criticized tax proposals he attributed to Biggs, saying increases of more than 20% would be harmful to the state’s economy.
  

• He also stated that he believes Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs is better suited to address the needs of Arizona families because of her ties to the state.
  

• “She is a true Arizonan – born here, raised here, and she worked as a social worker,” Reyes said. “She’s not a miracle worker. She is a person who works hard to make sure Arizonans get their fair shake.”
  

• Fernandez highlighted her roots in Yuma, her service in the Arizona Legislature and her work as state director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where she collaborated with farmers in Yuma County.
  

• Fernandez said southern Arizona’s agriculture industry is a major economic driver and argued that federal policies have affected local growers.
  

• “Tariffs hurt Arizona more than they do other states because we export so much more agricultural product than we bring in,” Fernandez said. “If we lose those markets, those farms can fail. It’s that simple.”
  

• She also criticized Biggs’ votes on healthcare legislation. She claimed cuts he supported caused premiums for 400,000 Arizonans to rise by 30% and contributed to a decline in Affordable Care Act coverage statewide.
  

• She added that those cuts have placed rural hospitals at risk.
  

• “Eight rural hospitals across Arizona are facing possible permanent closure,” Fernandez said.
  

• She said rural hospitals and clinics in Yuma and southern Arizona are “on the front lines of this crisis,” and referenced former Gov. Jan Brewer’s past warnings about cuts that threaten patient care.
  

• Fernandez said Biggs called the healthcare reductions “a good thing.”
  

• Fernandez added that Biggs’ votes on energy policy have contributed to higher gas prices.
  

• She said Biggs also acknowledged he voted against a bipartisan effort to lower fuel costs because he did not want to create a “political gotcha” for President Trump.
  

• Both speakers said they believe Arizona families are feeling the effects of rising costs and encouraged residents to learn more about the candidates and participate in the upcoming election.
