FACT CHECK: Andy Biggs Tries To Spin His Assault on Rural Hospitals After Backing Arizona’s Largest-Ever Medicaid Cut

8/14/25, 9:00 PM

While billionaire lobbyist Karrin Taylor Robson refuses to acknowledge the painful consequences for rural Arizona that she directly supported, extremist Andy Biggs is absurdly trying to spin his vote to imply that he did not sell out Arizona’s rural hospitals to provide tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.

Even though five rural hospitals in Arizona are at risk of closing because of the law that Biggs and Taylor Robson backed, Biggs now claims, “I voted for $50 billion in new funding for our rural hospitals and healthcare providers.”

The numbers tell a different story. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation:

  • The $50B rural health fund is temporary, lasting a maximum of five years while the cuts to Medicaid are permanent.

  • This temporary $50B rural health fund would only offset “about 5% of the permanent, total estimated cuts to Medicaid spending.”

  • When looking exclusively at rural costs, the one-time, $50B rural health fund “could offset a little over a third” of estimated cuts to rural areas.

  • A major portion of this funding (50%) is expectedly to be distributed without attention to each state’s population or total number of rural hospitals.

Arizona’s rural hospitals rightfully pushed back on Biggs’ absurd claims, calling this band-aid woefully inadequate, warning that one-time funding for rural hospitals “will not begin to offset the extensive cuts.”

Copper State Victory spokesperson Nicholas Simões Machado said:

“Andy Biggs is trying to rewrite history because he knows his vote to rip away health care and attack rural hospitals is deeply unpopular. This is just the latest example of how Biggs and Karrin Taylor Robson continue to defend their out-of-touch agenda to give tax breaks to their fellow millionaires and billionaires - all at the expense of rural Arizonans.”
