Two Years After Gov. Hobbs Repealed 1864 Abortion Ban, Biggs and Schweikert Threaten To Roll Back Reproductive Freedom to Civil War Era

Tomorrow marks two years since Gov. Katie Hobbs repealed the draconian 1864 abortion ban that required prison time for doctors, ending one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.
When that Civil War-era ban was reinstated in September 2022, Andy Biggs celebrated it as a “monumental win,” underscoring just how out-of-touch he is with Arizonans. While Arizonans from across party lines support reproductive freedom, Biggs and Schweikert have spent their careers pushing extreme restrictions.
Read more about Biggs and Schweikert’s extreme record of pushing abortion bans and attacking reproductive freedom:
Biggs has repeatedly pushed for a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions for rape and incest, threatening access to IVF and certain cancer treatments for women. He said that banning abortion is his “number one issue,” calling it “barbaric,” “evil,” a “heinous genocide,” and has consistently celebrated decisions restricting reproductive rights.
Schweikert cosponsored legislation to ban abortion nationwide six times and publicly supported the Dobbs decision. Schweikert voted to restrict servicemembers’ access to reproductive care, and earlier this year said he was “honored” to have an anti-choice record.
Copper State Victory spokesperson Nicholas Simões Machado said:
“Tomorrow marks two years since Gov. Hobbs repealed an extreme Civil War-era abortion ban that jailed doctors and denied care to women across our state. While Arizonans overwhelmingly support protecting reproductive freedom, Andy Biggs and David Schweikert are still pushing the same dangerous agenda that would take Arizona backward. Arizonans have already rejected this extremist agenda, and they will reject Biggs or Schweikert this November.”
