NBC News: Biggs Continues Dodging Reporters and Refuses To Say Trump Lost 2020

9/14/26, 3:00 PM

New reporting from NBC News highlights how Andy Biggs continues to avoid one fundamental question: did Trump lose in 2020? Despite being asked directly on multiple occasions, he has refused to answer, repeatedly deflecting, changing the subject, and growing frustrated when pressed by reporters.

Biggs has pushed false claims of election fraud, schemed to overturn the will of Arizona voters, and reportedly helped plan the January 6th rally that led to the attack on the Capitol. Even his own brothers said he is "partially to blame" for the insurrection, and a former Trump aide accused him of seeking a pardon for his role in the attack.

He also refuses to acknowledge Katie Hobbs won Arizona's 2022 gubernatorial election.

NBC News: GOP governor candidates cast doubt on the 2020 election. Now they’re changing their tune.

  • Several Republican candidates for governor in key battleground states have repeatedly cast doubt on the results of the 2020 presidential election.

  • But with competitive general election contests now fast approaching, they are eager to steer clear of the topic — with some even now acknowledging Joe Biden’s victory.

  • While questioning or outright denying the outcome of the 2020 election helped these Republicans curry favor with President Donald Trump and his supporters on their way to securing their nominations, the political calculus has changed as they set their sights on swaying independent voters in swing states amid a challenging environment for the party.

  • And Democrats are actively reminding voters of these candidates’ views, framing the 2020 election as a litmus test in states that will be at the center of the next presidential contest. Governors play an important role in the certification of presidential election results, including submitting the winners of their states to federal officials.

  • The issue has been particularly salient in Arizona and Wisconsin, where the GOP nominees for governor, Reps. Andy Biggs and Tom Tiffany, voted against certifying the 2020 election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Biggs and Tiffany also signed on to a Texas lawsuit in December 2020 that sought to invalidate Biden’s win.

  • For his part, Biggs has still refused to say Trump lost the election, but has sought to avoid engaging further on the topic as he prepares to face Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in November.

  • Asked three times by USA Today in July who won the 2020 election, Biggs refused to answer.

  • “I’m not going to be critical against Republicans, and we have a lot of people with a lot of diverse viewpoints,” he said at the time. “The reality is we’re going to win this state by looking forward and having a vision for the state.”

  • More recently, when pressed by The Salt Lake Tribune on whether Biden won, Biggs questioned why the reporter would ask about “something that took place six years ago.”

  • “Seriously, why are you? I’m going to tell you, most Arizonans are like I am. We’re going forward,” Biggs said.

  • A Biggs spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

  • While Biggs and Tiffany were directly involved in the issue, the 2020 election has also emerged in other key gubernatorial races this year.

  • Biggs, James and Tiffany all had Trump’s endorsement ahead of the primaries, while the president is now backing Jackson in the general election.

  • While Democrats plan to focus more on economic and affordability issues in the fall campaign, they say they will highlight Republican gubernatorial candidates’ approaches to the 2020 election because of the role they could play in critical states in 2028.

  • In Arizona, Hobbs has broached the topic frequently on the campaign trail and during media appearances.

  • “Arizona is one of seven swing states that will decide the presidential election,” she told MS NOW in July. “If Andy Biggs is governor, Arizona is the first swing state with an election denier in charge. The time to stop that is not 2028. It is right now.”

  • Hobbs campaign spokesperson Michael Beyer added: “While Andy Biggs is busy denying the 2020 election and pushing conspiracy theories, Governor Hobbs is hard at work fighting for Arizonans, lowering costs, cutting taxes for middle-class families, securing Arizona’s water, and bringing good-paying jobs to the state.”

  • Newton, of the DGA, also said Democrats would use the 2020 election as part of their attack that Republicans are prioritizing Trump’s own goals over voters’ well-being.

  • “In terms of voters and its electoral impact, the fact that they continue to deny the results of the 2020 election, which was safe and secure, is just another proof point, along with their support for the war in Iran that’s raising gas prices, the tariffs that’s raising grocery prices, the budget law that’s cutting health care, that these candidates are going to put Trump and their party’s agenda in D.C. first, no matter what; that they are putting their their own loyalty to Trump first,” Newton said.
