Arizona Physicians Slam Andy Biggs’ Scheme To Abolish Medicaid

Last week, Arizona physicians and disability advocates denounced Andy Biggs’ dangerous plot to abolish the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), which would have stripped healthcare coverage from over a million people, including 100,000 Arizonans with severe mental illness and developmental and physical disabilities. This followed a public letter by nearly 50 physicians and medical professionals condemning Biggs for this dangerous scheme.
Biggs' Republican colleagues rebuked the proposal at the time, warning it would decimate rural hospitals and that eliminating AHCCCS within months simply wasn't feasible. Two years later, Biggs fought then-Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s push to expand Medicaid. Brewer ultimately had to go around Biggs to pass Medicaid expansion and provide healthcare to 300,000 Arizonans.

In a Sept. 21 letter, a coalition of physicians and health care professionals criticized US Rep. Andy Biggs, the Republican nominee for governor, for his 2011 efforts to gut the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, or AHCCCS, the state’s Medicaid program.
As a state senator, Biggs introduced Senate Bill 1519, which would have abolished AHCCCS by October 2011. Biggs argued it cost taxpayers too much to provide health insurance for low-income Arizonans, according to the Arizona Mirror.
About 50 health care professionals signed onto the letter arguing that should Biggs win the gubernatorial race, the health of every Arizonan would be at risk.
“As medical professionals, we believe your effort to eliminate Medicaid is disqualifying,” the letter states.
